We’d be lying if we said Pani Puri isn’t the most loved street food of India. India being so diverse, some people call it puchka, some golgappas, and some Pani Puri. But what unites us all, is our undying love for this flavorful dish. The dish has been around for centuries and is also known as "the Indian burrito." In this blog, we will tell you about some of the interesting things about this dish and also share a mouth-watering Pani Puri recipe so that you can make it at home yourself.
Pani puri occupies a very special place in Indian hearts and stomachs, especially for women. So it’s no wonder that the treat of pani puri has been one of the country’s most missed street snacks during the lockdown.
In the bustling markets and noisy main streets of big cities and small towns alike, the very familiar and favourite corner for all is the Pani Puri Wala (seller) centre, surrounded by a gaggle of eager customers. Indians love these small, satisfying snacks because they fill the small hunger spots perfectly when lunch is a distant memory and dinner has yet to be cooked.
The word Pani Puri itself is a combination of pani (water, which refers to the diluted chutneys) and puri (the fried discs of dough). Puri is stuffed with mashed potatoes, sprouts, chana dal, onions and then Pani (pudina and coriander chutney) is added to it and served. Pop it into your mouth and wait for the explosion of flavours. As the puri crumbles inside your mouth with the awesome taste flowing out, it is a delight to eat it.
Pani Puri is so loved because it is very versatile. Not only its name, but its flavours vary too. People who like spicy flavours only add teekha pani to the puri, and those who like sweet flavour also add date and tamarind chutney to it. You can even change the filing in the puri as per your own liking.
