Cancer is one of the most complex and devastating diseases in human history.

Although most processed meats are red meat, fresh red meat has been categorized as Group 2A carcinogens, meaning they are cancer-causing foods in humans.

Read meats include beef, lamb, and pork are the most beloved worldwide, but eating them frequently, especially in large quantities, may contribute to cancer risk.

The cancer risk from red meat increases with methods like grilling or barbecuing at high temperatures, which can create harmful compounds like heterocyclic amines (HCAs).

Meat can be a part of a balanced diet when consumed in moderation and paired with veggies and whole grains.

2. Fried foods:

Fried foods like French fries, fried chicken, and doughnuts are delicious, but they can increase your risk of cancer.

When you cook starchy foods like potatoes at high temperatures, like deep frying, they can form acrylamide, a chemical classified as a probable human carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). (1, 2)

Acrylamide in fried foods can increase your risk of type 2 diabetes and obesity. These conditions can increase inflammation and further increase your risk of cancer.

3. Sugar and Refined carbohydrates:

While sugar doesn’t directly cause cancer, it increases your risk of obesity, insulin resistance, and chronic inflammation, all of which are known cancer factors. (1)

Foods like white bread, pastries, sugary cereals, and sugary drinks can cause rapid blood sugar spikes and insulin levels, creating an internal environment that may promote the growth of cancer cells.

Studies have consistently linked ovarian, breast, and endometrial cancer to and high glycemic diet. (1)

You can replace refined carbs with whole grains, fiber-rich vegetables, and healthy fats that help stabilize your blood sugar and support overall health.

4. Alcohol:

When you consume alcohol, your body breaks down a well-known carcinogen, acetaldehyde.

Acetaldehyde can promote DNA damage and oxidative stress, interfere with your immune function, and make it difficult for your body to target cancerous cells.

Alcohol is a popular carcinogenic drink, and strong evidence links its consumption to several types of cancer, including breast, liver, colorectal, and mouth cancers.

Even moderate drinking can increase your risk of cancer, particularly in women. The risk can multiply when paired with tobacco.

Health experts agree that there’s no “safe” level of alcohol, and people should avoid it completely.

What foods can lower your risk of Cancer?

Some foods can be beneficial to your health and reduce your risk of cancer. Including them in your diet provides you with essential nutrition.

Dieticians and nutritionists recommend a largely vegetarian diet including fiber, proteins, probiotics, and nutrients to help lower your risk of cancer.

  • Fruits and vegetables: Rich in antioxidants and protect you from oxidative stress and cell damage.
  • Nuts and Seeds: These superfoods can help reduce inflammation and cancer risk.
  • Beans: Rich in fiber and may reduce your risk of colorectal cancer.
  • Whole grains: These provide varied nutrients necessary for a balanced diet.
  • Omega-3: Sources like fish, flaxseeds, and chia seeds can lower your risk of inflammation.
